Mission

"To provide the best possible fire and rescue service to the residents of our district and any other jurisdiction we serve.  Also, it is to treat our personnel professionally and offer them an opportunity for personal growth and fulfillment in serving their community."

 

Types of Membership

 

Social

  • All applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be a resident of Berlin or of an adjoining town of Berlin
  • Social members participate in monthly meetings and committees that help govern the department.  Social members do not respond to any calls

Cadets

  • Cadets may apply from age 16 and 17 years of age
  • Must live in the town of Berlin or be in the Berlin school system for no less than 6 months
  • Maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.0 (C-)

Probationary Firefighter

  • All new members will partake in a training course that takes about 10-12 classes to complete.

    • This class covers various topics including: Department Standard Operating Procedures and guidelines, Apparatus familiarization, water supply, ground ladders, and various other topics.

    • This not only familiarizes you with how we operate but it also allows you to prepare yourself for what firefighter 1 is all about.

Active Firefighter

  • All applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Active Members respond to fire/rescue calls
  • Active members participate in monthly meeting and committees that help govern the department. 
  • Active members are expected to meet certain criteria:
    • Must pass a Town of Berlin Physical
    • Work in the town, live in the town, or live within 1 mile from the town border
    • Respond to at least 25% of calls of their availability
    • Complete all mandatory drills and training
    • Be a participating member of at least 1 committee
    • Attend the fire academy within 1 year of membership and achieve Firefighter I status

**All members regardless of membership class must remain in good standing as defined in the bylaws**

All applications must be submitted to the fire administrator, and accompanied with a non-refundable application processing fee of (5) five dollars

The new applicant shall meet with the application officer and/or 2 or 3 members of the Board of Directors for and interview within 14 days of receipt
