BERLIN-The Veterans Commission honored the Volunteer Fire Department for its continued support with a special plaque.

Back in December, the BVFD gave the Berlin Veterans Commission a donation of $10,000. The BVFD raised the funds over the course of the year through its events including the “Freedom Fry” booth at the Berlin Fair, a comedy show, the annual car show and a motorcycle show, Fire Administrator James Simons said at the time.

This was the fifth year in a row that the BVFD made a donation, which inspired the Berlin Veterans Commission to show its appreciation.

Peter Galgano, Secretary of the Berlin Veterans Commission, gave another reason for the creation of the plaque.

“Firefighters risk their lives every day, and many have made the ultimate sacrifice while running toward danger to protect the communities they serve,” Galgano said. “This [plaque] shows the Berlin Veterans Commission appreciation for the Berlin Firefighters who risk their lives everyday and also do a whole lot more for their community.”

The plaque was presented to the BVFD at the February meeting of the Berlin Veterans Commission.
