By J. Dumin
July 31, 2020

At 16:57 Company 3 was dispatched to Frontage rd in the area of the Route 9 ramps for a fuel truck on its side. Shortly after dispatch Car 32 was advised that the truck was on its side, leaking fuel, and extrication might be involved. Companies 1 and 2 were added to the assignment. Car 32 arrived on scene to find a fuel tanker on its side actively leaking gasoline from all compartments of the tanker. The occupant was able to self-extricate and was being evaluated by Hunters ambulance service.

Engine 8 arrived on scene and began deploying hose lines to suppress the gasoline vapors and protect the area. Companies on scene were able to slow the leak using a plug kit. Due to the heat and duration of incident, numerous mutual aid companies were dispatched to the scene. Crews remained on scene well into the night while D.E.E.P and Environmental Services offloaded the remaining fuel in the tanker and cleaned up the area.

Great job in containing what could have been a catastrophic event. The town of Berlin and its residents should be aware and appreciate its volunteer fire departments and the work they do responding to all calls and alarms. Hats off to the surrounding fire departments who answer the call for aid!
